Papier und tinte (Paper and ink), proposes a series of drawings of five covers and interior pages of the newspapers La Vanguardia and Amauta from the years 1970 until 1992, and the documentation of the public installation of each one of the covers on Lima’s kiosks during 2019.
The piece owes its name to an article, which is a conversation between Sigmund Freud and Jacques Derrida in the book “Archive Fever. A Freudian Impression” (1995), where Derrida briefly presents and analyzes the words “papier und tinte. Eindruck, druck, drücken” (impression, print, to press). Reflecting about the mass production of newspaper, reproductibility through time and press in modern history.
Under that premise, after a process of documentation and research on the newspaper’s archives of La Vanguardia in Barcelona and in the National Library in Lima, I started to analize the way of “keeping” and “conserving” the different types of newspapers, the ones who were archived according to the new that was announced on how crucial or important was that event during that time. And how that “hierchysation of history”, of historical events, was organizing and classfing the history of a territory inside the newspaper archive.
In this way, appealing to the importance of what represents and event in history and how does the new arrives to us as a shape of newspaper, as press or mass media, I decided to choose five covers and interior pages from the newspaper archive and reproduce each one of them with ink and mixed tecniques (frotagge, phototransfer). In order to make a series of five hand made newspapers respecting the size of the original paper. With the idea of yuxtapose and confront the idea of the mass production of news and information, the printing, the distribution, it’s “technological reproductibility”.
Thus, Papier und tinte proposes, as it was mentioned before, a series of 5 drawings of covers/interiors, whose after been finished were installed on the newspaper shops in Lima’s streets. Already in the public space, the covers/interiors of the project were registered during the day that they were exposed, where people’s reactions over the pieces was documentated.
