Sant Martí de Solamal church

Bianya Valley, Catalonia

Having as a place the Sant Martí de Solamal church in the Bianya Valey (Catalonia) and as a starting point the project Bianya / Viaña 1937 (Barcelona, 2015), The hygiene of memory proposes a projected video on the apse of the church on a totally dark environment, where two hands are seen inserting a photograph of the same church into the water in a baptismal font. Once the image is completely inside the sound of the bells "interfere" and "distort" the image for a few seconds, repeating itself over and over again. The hygiene of memory, proposes the water as a central element of the piece, either as a liturgical-religious element, and as a tool for the disappearance of the image; at the moment when the vibration of sound interferes in such a way that interrupts the image's atmosphere and, at the same time, disintegrates it.

On the other hand, the project alludes to gestures that are part of daily life and even of history; Like the gest that a person does at the moment of getting into a church, he/she touches the holy water of the pike and makes cross sign, or the action of "washing his hands" as a metaphor for misunderstanding about an event or situation, a gesture that also contains a strong Biblical and historical significance.

Finally, as its name says, The hygiene of the memory puts into dialogue a series of concepts that surround the image of the water, of the hygiene "itself" in how it is used for the representation, intervention and disappearance of the memory of a geographical site.
